Season 2, Episode 8 (originally released on May 18, 2018)

On today’s episode we’ll be talking about a personal childhood favorite of Michael’s; Jim Henson’s LABYRINTH. Directed by Jim Henson from a script penned by Terry Jones, LABYRINTH tells the story of young Sarah (Jennifer Connelly) and her obsession with all things fantasy. Sarah likes to spend her free time with her dog Merlin playing pretend. Her favorite story to re-create? A book that she carries with her everywhere simply title “LABYRINTH”. Sarah is often distracted and the idea of “growing up” and having responsibilities doesn’t really appeal to her. Sarah’s step mother and father go out for a date night and expect Sarah to watch her baby Brother Toby. Not wanting to actually care for the child, she in jest asks for the Goblin King Jareth (David Bowie) from her story to take Toby away so she doesn’t have to care for him. Little does she know, her wish is granted, and if Sarah wants to get Toby back, she must traverse a dangerous Labyrinth filled with colorful characters, monsters and some puzzling tricks. LABYRINTH was met with pretty favorable reviews overall, even though both Siskel and Ebert were not fans. However, the film took on a life of its own and opened up the wonders that is the imagination of Jim Henson in a way that the Muppets simply hadn’t. LABYRINTH is now a timeless classic for many, and is known as one of the most iconic film roles David Bowie ever took on.
