Good day, Mandaters! We come to you from a galaxy far, far away for this episode and by that I mean, we saw this thing in University City. If you didn’t guess by the headline, myself and my guest, Mr. Chris “X” Striegel (This Is Hardcore, Philly Hardcore Shows), took a trip beyond the stars to catch an early screening of the 2nd non-episode installment of the Star Wars universe, Solo: A Star Wars Story. Not only is this the second time that Disney ventured away from the episodic nature of the series, this is also the first solo origin film for a character. Pun definitely intended.
Before the screening, we dove into Chris’ level of nerdom when it comes to the Star Wars universe. Chris elaborated a little on what was previously considered cannon, that was eventually thrown out once Disney bought the rights, and what he hoped to make it into the film. We discussed what we actually knew about the film and other than it being an origin film or the things that occurred in the other films, we didn’t actually know much, by choice. We both expected to be entertained and had high levels of expectations due to Disney knocking it out of the park so far with The Force Awakens, Rogue One, and The Last Jedi. However, we both held onto some reservations because this movie only really works if Alden Ehrenreich can nail the part. If he’s weak, the rest of the story kind of falls apart because Harrison Ford has already set a bar of what is expected and needed.
After the screening you get to hear two grown adults, giddy as all hell, discuss what we loved, liked, and even what we thought was a little corny about the film. We do everything we can to keep it as spoiler free as possible but in the midst of our excitement a few sneak out. Nothing major, but if you want to go in blind, wait until after you see the movie before listening to our review.
Thanks again for checking it out. I’ll be back in a week or two when my guest and I sit down to review the much hyped A24 horror, Hereditary. So stay tuned. Until then, listen, like, share, repeat.
